Paul Cézanne (French, 1839–1906) is widely recognized today as one of the founders of modern art. A largely self-taught painter, he did not fit in with any one artistic group following his arrival in Paris in 1861, but this enabled him to pursue new painting techniques and styles. His color choices and analytical, often geometric, approach to painting would go on to influence a new generation of artists, especially the avant-garde cubists and fauves. Already skilled in landscapes and figure drawing, Cézanne focused on creating still-life compositions during the 1890s. The paintings created during this period, including the four in this notecard assortment, have become some of Cézanne’s most iconic works.
