    Stunning glass bowl/vase in varying shades of yellow and purple by Arizona artist Tom Philabaum. This piece of hand blown glass was designed and created at Philabaum Glass Studios in Tucson, Arizona. Tom Philabaum began studying the art of glassblowing at the University of Wisconsin in 1971, earning an MA in 1973. After coming to Tucson in 1975, he built his first glass studio, and in 1983, earned and MFA from the University of Arizona. His glass studio has been a landmark in the Tucson art scene for over 30 years, creating utilitarian, sculptural and architectural works in a tradition that dates back thousands of years.

    This beautifully handcrafted pen combines three elements that exemplify Arizona: copper, a vital natural resource; turquoise the state gemstone; and mesquite, a tree that grows through its desert regions. Mesquite burls that were harvested when clearing land for the Javelina Leap Winery were used in the creation of this pen, and the wood is branded with the artisan's logo. The copper hardware has a clear epoxy coating to protect it.

He has been working with glass since he first explored the medium in the early 70's. Born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, George first came to Arizona on a family vacation and decided to stay and work at the Grand Canyon.

    He later moved to Flagstaff and attended NAU where he was first introduced to hot glass.  For George it was love at first blow...glass art became his passion and life's work.
